Fran took on the job, providing repairs for the Fairbanks Morse stand-by generators located throughout the Boston Public School system. Fortunately, Fran had a customer in the generator-sales business who needed a repairman. Suddenly, owning gas stations became problematic: Gas supplies dwindled, long ration lines formed, and the country sank into a steep recession. The young company picked up some customers, but Fran’s gas stations remained the center of his business world. As the Manor’s lights came on, an entrepreneurial bulb lit in Fran’s head: He realized there weren’t many generator companies around, and that generators were in increasing demand following the 1965 blackout.įran, using his initials, started a company in 1970 called FM Machine.
